It's hard not to know things anymore with Facebook being the leading social media app and website. The other day I saw some pictures of a giant rubber duck floating around the waterfront in Tacoma. Turns out this duck travels the world and has since 2007. How did I not know this? Apparently the duck didn't come to the US until September 2013 when it invaded Pittsburg.
It was on display for the Festival of Sail. We were going to go disc golfing at Steilacoom and I asked Ben if we could go to Tacoma first to see the duck. I really didn't want to go to Tacoma but if I didn't go and see the duck I would regret it every day. I started collecting ducks when I was little. My first duck was given to me by Grammie when I was around 2ish. I still have that rubber duck in my collection.
We made sure we had everything and headed out. Traffic wasn't that bad. I thought it would be worse because the duck was in town. Ben knew some places to park and walk down to the waterfront. He took a quarter at UW-Tacoma and knew the area pretty well. One, that sucks he went to a Husky school, two, I'm glad he knows his way around because I sure don't, three, parking was free and four, I got to see a giant duck.
We parked behind the school and walked down towards the glass museum. The last time I was on the glass bridge with the glass rock candy on it was probably 2012 when I came here to do some geocaches and some of the geocache challenges. We followed the heard of people down to the waterfront. Like I said, we just came for the duck...but it took an hour to park, walk down, get pictures, walk back up and leave. Very few people came for the Festival of Sail...everyone came for the duck.
We took our array of photos and I brought one of my small rubber duckies for the photo opportunity. I still can't believe I was seeing the largest duck in the world. I kinda wanted to bring it home because it was the ultimate duck anyone could own. It was probably as big as our house and it wouldn't fit in my bathtub.
We walked back to the car and noticed there was a skateboarding competition nearby. That's why we saw so many skateboards when we were parking. We decided not to stay and watch and head over to Fort Steilacoom for some disc golf.
Probably about eight or nine years ago now, the guy I was hanging out with a the time, tried going to Fort Steilacoom to play disc golf but this was before we had GPS's and whatnot. We couldn't find it, got lost and decided to chill near the Chamber's Bay area at a tiny park I can't remember the name of. Luckily Ben knew the area and has been there before. We had no trouble finding it. The disc golf area was at the golf course and not actually at Fort Steilacoom. That threw me off. We parked and started warming up a bit in the field nearby. There was a truck parked near hole one. It was a guy who came out on the weekends and sold disc golf supplies. Ben went in and looked around a bit. He would end up purchasing one of their Roadrunner discs after we were done with our round.
We chose the northwest course and ended up starting at the wrong hole. We just went from there in order. This course was well taken care of but the obstacles sucked. So many trees and brush to hit and lose your discs in. Luckily most of my throws were in bounds and away from the brush. Around the 6th or 7th hole we ran into a guy and his son. We ended up playing over half of our round with them. His kid had to be around 11 or so. He was pretty good for his age. He made us look bad at some of our holes. Near around the last hole we did, the kid lost his disc and we helped him look for it. I ended up finding a disc with no one's name on it. It wasn't his but we kept it because it didn't have a contact number on it. The kid started crying because he disappointed his dad by losing a disc. His dad explained to him that it was just a disc and they could get more. The kid still was upset by it. We finished our last hole and called it good.
We had to get going so we thanked them and told them it was nice meeting them and we might run into them somewhere down the road. They reciprocated the gesture. We had a game night scheduled for Megan and Matt's house at 5:30ish. Ben and I signed up to bring chips, camping chairs and ice and we still had to stop by the store to grab them. So all we had to do now was stop by the store and home really quickly and we would be on our way to Rainier.
About half way there it started sprinkling. No one likes rain during a bon fire night! Ugh!! I've been so disgusted with our June weather for the past few years. We have a period of really nice summer weather and then June hits and it forgets it's summer and then we get all of this lame yucky rain. It's hard to plan things outside.
We were one of the first people to their house and Matt already had the first going. Everyone was going to be a little late so we started without them. I cooked my hotdog to perfection, went inside to dress it up, grabbed a handful of chips and grabbed my Dr. Pepper and hung out outside for a bit. It was now misting outside. A lot of us came in and out as more people arrived. The weather settled down a bit and more people were able to sit outside and cook their food.
We had a plethora of s'more's stuff to experiment with. Once everyone arrived we just hung out around the bon fire and talked about random things. Somehow my brother dressing us as Leeloo at Comicon came up in the conversation and Del remembers it being spread around Reddit. I told him that was my brother and he was like, THAT was your brother? I showed everyone pictures and they all just about died laughing.
Some people had other things to get to so some of us hung out inside and played some games. One of them was a Cyanide and Happiness card game...similar to Cards Against Humanity but a tad bit different. There was a lot of laughing at the inappropriate card selections.
We wanted to play one more game that could involve everyone who stayed so Megan dug up a board game called Sequence. I have never played it but I ended up liking it a lot. In fact, I tried looking for it at the Goodwill several times before I found it at Shopko. Del and I almost won but lost to Matt and Megan. Nicole and Ben were disappointed as well. We had fun nonetheless. We picked up our stuff, thanked Megan and Matt for hosting and headed home. It was after midnight. I had to take a shower after being around a bon fire and smelling like smoke. Shortly after jumped into bed and fell asleep.
