I took the Friday off so we could leave Thursday night. I should have taken half of Thursday off as well just so we didn't have to get to Yakima so late in the evening but I was doing claim orders at work and they needed to be done so they could be mailed out on Friday. We went grocery shopping the night before after I got home so we could get it done and I could have time to pack up all of the camping gear and my personal stuff. I had a lot to do and so little time to do it in. It's amazing how fast time flies when you need to get stuff done and be in bed by a decent time.
I went to work and was distracted most of the day for some reason. I knew my day was going to be ruined somehow by something I just didn't know what it was. You could go weeks without something happening because you have no plans to having plans and many things going wrong. At around 1:30 I got a phone call at my desk and it was Suzanne, my carpool ride. She said, in tears, that she needed to leave right away because her dad was having complications with the surgery and she may have to leave on a plane to California. I told her okay and met her down in the Rotunda. Since she drove this week I was basically stuck at work. I called Ben and asked him to pick me up from work at four. I really wanted to leave before five when everyone got off work. I knew we weren't going to.
Ben came and got me around four and on the way home we stopped at Meconis because he ordered us sandwiches for the ride out. Even though they were probably done being made, since he called them in, we had to wait in a huge line just to pay for our food. We eventually got home and I saw he packed up the Escape with all of our stuff except for the last minute things I had to do myself. I changed my clothes into more comfortable ones, used the restroom and packed my clothes bag and a few extra things.
We left around 5:45 towards Yakima. I was basically in Yelm when I realized I might have left my wallet in my other bag. The reason why this happened was because we had a fire drill at work and I brought it with me. I was so mad we had to turn around and meet Suzanne at the EVG on Yelm Highway. We wasted a good half hour of travel time because of a dumb fire drill...yes, I am going to blame it on the fire drill. If it wouldn't have happened I wouldn't have moved my wallet. I thanked her and we hit the road once again towards Yelm. I was so irritated. We made our way via Hwy 702 through Eatonville and down Hwy 7 through Morton. We got onto Hwy 12 and I wished we had more time to grab some of the Rainier100 caches along the way.
I didn't plan on stopping anywhere unless someone had to go to the bathroom. While driving I told him stories about some of the caching trips I've done out here and we talked about other random things along the way until he fell asleep for a while...I just listened to my music.
This is the first time in a while there wasn't a lot of slow traffic (horse trailers, semi trucks and motor homes) in front of me hindering my progress. We actually got through the east side of the pass in about 40 minutes.
We got to the point where 410 merges with Hwy 12. We were finally almost there. I was getting tired. Getting up at six sucks, having a long day at work and then traveling sucks more but I wanted to maximize our time by leaving Thursday instead of Friday morning. We pulled up around 8:30 and I was excited to meet Kevin. Kevin is their foster kid and has had him since November. Willmarth has sent me various pictures of him doing things like Mariner games and watching football games. Unfortunately, he is a Denver Broncos fan and I was ready to make fun of him.
We walked into the house and Kevin was being very shy by hiding from us. Shannon started to make fun of him and wondering why he was hiding from us. I said out loud, "Kevin, we are not scary!" Eventually he came out and met us. We visited for a while and went outside for a bit and played basketball in the driveway. The kid, you could tell, was damaged by the way he talked to us. He wasn't mean or anything but the things he said were interesting. Ben continued playing basketball with him while I helped Willmarth bring in and install his new dryer. I guess the other one just pooped out on them. When we got into the house there were clothes every where hung up drying.
We chatted about all kinds of stuff while we were getting that thing put together. He told me Kevin's story and what was developing out of that. He and Shannon have decided to adopt him but the case worker assigned to him is a huge moron so now they have to wait longer. We did get the dryer put together and even stuck some of the clothes in there to make sure it was working. He will need to buy a longer power cord. We walked into the living room and Ben was playing a football video game with Kevin. I think they were on the same team.
We ate a really late dinner, some stuff from the Schwann's man. I hung out in the living room powering up our devices and attempting to get the computer on the internet so I could check out a few caches that we were going to get tomorrow and write them down. Shannon came in and discussed the bed situation. I told them that I really didn't mind where we slept and that it was kinda up to them. It got really complicated and we ended up in Kevin's room while Kevin slept on the floor of the living room. I gave Ben the bed and I took the floor. I helped Shannon put together the beds. It was roughly midnight and we all needed some rest. They had planned on going to Hoopfest tomorrow so I knew they needed some sleep. I think we got to bed around one. I fell asleep really fast.
