Family Hike to Coldwater Lake (Mt. St. Helens)

Mom and I wanted to do something as a family during our weekend and we both decided to do a hike near Mt. St. Helens.  We got Dad on board, Erika said she wanted to and would drag Zach along and Doug said that he needed to get out of the house and do something so he agreed to come.  The night before I got all of my hiking stuff together and set it aside, got some of my non-perishable lunch items together and will make my sandwich the next day.  Since we were going to forest land I had to purchase and print a NW Forest Pass for $5.  Not a big deal.  I set that aside with my other stuff that was ready to go.

The next morning we got up around 6, put our clothes on, made some sandwiches and put it all in the back of the Escape.  Erika, Zach and I went and got Doug.  But before we could leave the house, Erika couldn't find her phone so it made us late actually picking up Doug.  Of course when we got there Doug made a giant effort to let us know that we were late.  We told him what had happened.  He threw his stuff in the back and now we were off to Mom and Dad's house.  Along the way we would have to mail a package for Jenn, which I wasn't sure why she couldn't have mailed it?

We got into Rainier and Mom and Dad weren't quite ready yet...of course.  We packed up Mom's Expedition, since it was big enough to fit everyone, locked the house, packed everyone into the SUV and we were finally off.  We didn't leave until almost 8 and of course they made me drive.  We drove west down 507 towards Tenino, into Grand Mound and onto I-5 south.  You could hear mom and Doug discussing where to drop off the package at.  We weren't sure when the post offices opened.  We approached Castle Rock and I told them we could find the post office here and drop it off?  Yeah?  I had them look up the address for the post office.  We arrived and I sat in the SUV.  They told me to drive over to the grocery store because they wanted coffee.  We all used the restroom before we left.

We left town and drove over the freeway onto Hwy 504 or the Spirit Lake Highway.  This road was basically obliterated in the eruption.  25 miles of roadway and 7 of the 8 highways bridges were destroyed or buried underneath the enormous lahar that charged down the Toutle River valley.  Kid Valley was the only area that survived because of its clearance from the mudflow.

We drove through the small town of Toutle.  We reminisced on the times we came here to play against them in high school.  The last time I came here to play we beat Toutle Lake in a double header fastpitch game almost 20 years ago.  Since then, I've been here a few times over the years visiting Mt. St. Helens and grabbing geocaches with various people.  We drove past the cement Sasquatch statue and I should have stopped for a group photo but I figured we might do it on the way back.  We started up the grade.

I followed Nuvi's directions because I wasn't really sure where the parking area was for this particular trailhead.  The landscape changes every time I come up here.  The trees are getting taller, the plants are coming in thicker and overall it is recovering as fast as it can...even though it's been 39 years.  This area is forever changed.  We made the turn off of the highway and another turn into the parking lot of Coldwater Lake.  We got there around 10 a.m.  We used the restroom, got our hiking shoes on, gathered our packs, water, cameras, cell phones and off we went.  The weather was decent.  Warm with a slight breeze and high scattered clouds.

We started off at the Birth of a Lake Trail, which was on the boardwalk and took a few pictures.

We spent about 20 minutes here before we started onto the Lakes Trail (#211) Trailhead along the shoreline.  There, we began our out and back hike along the lake on a well maintained trail.  Along the way we stopped about three times to take pictures, eat some snacks and take some well needed water breaks.  The scenery was gorgeous and the viewpoints of the lake were very scenic.

From this trail you can't see the mountain because of the hills blocking our view.  We knew where it was but sadly we weren't able to see it.  You barely could at the boardwalk.  There were quite a few people kayaking in the lake and it centralized around the hummock.

The trail was pretty moderate.  There were a lot of flat straight parts and some hilly gain elevation spots.  There were a lot of Douglas Firs, Cedar, various mountain grasses, plants, shrubs, we saw rabbits, many kids of birds, bees, butterflies and insects.  Most of the hike was flat and straight but there were some hills and climbs in elevation but we all were in pretty good shape so none of us really had any trouble.  We did pass by a few hikers along the way.

A few places had small creeks we had to cross and there were small foot bridges in place to keep the erosion at a minimum, there was a larger area that looked like a washout almost at the end of the lake where a lot of water either comes through during the winter every season or had come through at some point because it was worn out.  There were a lot of rocks, pumice, ash and hardly any vegetation in this one spot.  As we got closer to the end of the lake, we noticed a lot more Alder trees around the edge of the lake.

The trail sorta ended at the end of the lake and we all decided it was a great time to find a spot to sit and eat lunch.  It was about 12:45.  We all made some sort of sandwich, chips, fruit and a drink.  I brought my famous go to, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and some Doritos.  We ate our food and enjoyed the scenery.  Throughout bites of food, we took turns throwing rocks at a rogue log floating in the lake.  We took several pictures before cleaning up, putting our packs back on and headed back to the parking lot.  We left around 1:15.

Since we already saw most of the stuff on the way in, we didn't stop as much on the way back, except for water.  I did take a few pictures but for the most part we just walked and talked about various things.  Mom's knee was starting to hurt so she slowed down and my feet were starting to hurt about halfway back.  We did stop at the biffy (bathroom in the forest for you) and we all used it before we hiked on.  As we got closer, I started to speed up because my feet were hurting more, we were almost there and I had to use the bathroom somewhat urgently.

We got back to the trailhead and the parking lot around 3.  I used the restroom as quickly as I could while everyone else gathered at the Expedition to take their socks and shoes off.  I met them there shortly after.  I needed to trade my hiking shoes for some flip flops.  We piled in and we all smelled pretty bad.  I had everyone crack their window.  We drove back towards I-5 down Hwy 504.  I wanted to stop at a view so we could see the mountain today.  We stopped at Elk Rock Overlook (was surprised there wasn't a geocache at this viewpoint) and took a group picture.  The mountain had clouds hiding the top of it but we could still see it.

Everyone was pretty tired so we didn't get to stop at the cement Sasquatch statue like I wanted.  Oh well.  Maybe next time?  We got on I-5 and asked what people would like for dinner.  Mom and I usually go to Papa Pete's Pizza but no one wanted pizza.  Okay, then what did everyone want then?  No one said anything so I took everyone to Dairy Queen in Centralia.  We ate dinner and then had ice cream.  This is what you get when you don't answer my question when I am driving.  I had a chicken basket and a strawberry sundae.  It hit the spot after a long hike.

We stopped at the Safeway up the road so mom could get some potatoes for potato salad but they didn't have any she wanted.  We got back on the freeway and got off at the exit for Tenino/Rainier.  When we got to Tenino we stopped at Dave's Market.  They didn't have her potatoes either.  We just went home, dropped off mom and dad, traded our stuff into the Escape, petted mom's kitty Chloe and left to go home.

I went to my house first because Erika and Zach didn't want to go with to drop Doug off, so I dropped them off and drove to Doug's house.  He said he had a good time but was glad to be home so he could shower and relax.  He said he was probably going to be sore the next day.  I agreed with him.  This was probably the first physical thing he's done with us in a really long time.  I needed to get one more cache for the 7 caches for 7 days streak.  I drove into Hawks Prairie because there has been some new caches publish over the last two weeks.  I grabbed Pink Flamingo Frost (GC8BRX2) which was over by the Dutch Brothers coffee stand.  It didn't take me long to find it.  I logged my name, got my picture and put it back.  I went home and showered.

I made some popcorn and watched the Cougars beat New Mexico State 58-7.  After the game, I was tired so I went to bed.  I knew I was also going to be sore tomorrow but probably not as bad as Doug.  I took some Tylenol PM, snuggled with my cat and got some Zzzz's.

Seahawks vs. Raiders Preseason Game

Our friend Del decided he didn't want to go to preseason this year so he asked if we wanted to go.  Ben couldn't go due to work so I asked mom if she wanted to go to the preseason game against the Raiders.  She said that sounded good and she would take part of the day off since she also had Friday off as well.  I also found out that my friend Liz and Darren were also going to the same game.  Their friend gave them tickets.  I asked her at work one day if we wanted to carpool up to Seattle and she said she would have to think about it because she wasn't sure of her and Darren's schedule that day.  I said, alright and told her to let me know when she knew.

I talked to mom about it as well.  I told her I really didn't know when we were going to leave nor if we had time to dink around Seattle.  I also added that Liz and Darren might catch a ride up with us but I wasn't 100% sure at this point.  I also mentioned that we needed to bring some sort of rain gear because it was suppose to rain that night.  I packed up the rain ponchos in our clear stadium appropriate bag.  I put in for a half day off and all of Friday at work.  I figure we were going to be out pretty late and I had scheduled an appointment for that afternoon a few weeks ago.  So it all worked out.  I was going to have a 4.5 day weekend with Labor Day being on Monday.  I was super stoked!

Liz said she and Darren would ride up with us and I told her we could leave early afternoon and head up.  I noticed lately Liz had been acting weird.  She was not as open with me as she used to be.  I feared the future of our friendship but I pushed it aside for the time being.  I honestly didn't think she and Darren would go with us. That morning, I got all of my work done except for the phone calls.  I left at 11:30.  Everyone said have fun at the Seahawks game.  I told them I would and I would see them on Tuesday.  I headed home and called mom to tell her just to go home, eat lunch and meet me at my house by 1.  I texted Liz and Darren to find out when they were going to be here.  They said they were just leaving the house and had to get gas.  By my guess they would be here around 1:30ish.  Mom got here and hung out a bit.

Liz and Darren arrived and told me that they hadn't eaten yet and they wanted to go to Red Robin's before we drove up to Seattle.  I said sure, why not.  Mom and I already ate because we didn't know about this lunch plan.  Just as well because now we didn't have to spend money for two meals...but just dinner at the stadium.  Darren sat with me in the front while Liz and my mom sat in the back.  Darren was chatty the entire ride to Seattle.

We got to Seattle pretty quickly and I was amazed to find a spot off of Massachusetts and 8th Ave near the DSHS building.  We were lucky and didn't have to pay for parking!  I found a place to parallel park, hid my stuff I didn't want seen under the seats, grabbed our stuff and walked the few blocks to the Clink.

It had started to rain lightly on our way to the stadium and I am so glad we brought the rain ponchos.  Liz and Darren not so prepared and they had tickets on the 100 level where there is no cover.  They were going to get soaked unless they purchased the $5 Seahawk ponchos from the team store.  We got to the field house, went through security and inside to figure out where we wanted to go first.  I saw the tattoos and wanted one so we stood in line for that.  We made small talk as we waited.  When it was our turn I got the logo made it green and blue and added glitter because I could.  I gave my artist a dollar just to be nice.  I'm sure they appreciated the tips.  I walked over to the Q13 booth to grab a new durable schedule sign.  I grabbed a few more to bring home and give to people.

Mom and I walked towards the AmFam booth and we lost Liz and Darren in the process.

AmFam were always taking game time photos and sometimes autographs from former Seahawks.  Today's autograph was from former guard Edwin Bailey, who wore #65.  We walked up and had him sign my towel and we took a picture with him.

We thanked him and we both decided it was time to head upstairs into the stadium.  I was actually getting somewhat hungry so I asked mom if she was hungry as well.  She said sure.  I got the tickets on my phone and the ticket ushers scanned them and away we went.

We decided on Ivar's since we have this maybe once or twice a year.  We stood in line and ordered two fish and chips and a bunch of tartar.  I grabbed a drink and our food and we walked over to a free table, sat down and ate.  Liz texted me asking where we were at.  I told her at a table near the team store.  Her and Darren were watching the little cheerleaders, which were probably going to be the half time show.  They eventually found us and they had to buy a poncho.  Before they walked to their seats, I told them to meet us here after the game.  Mom and I started our hike to our seats.  We were on the 300 level in section 309.  We stopped by the Seahawk wings on the way to our seats.  Mom wanted a picture.

It rained most of the game but mom and I were covered so we didn't have to wear our ponchos in our seats and we didn't get soaked.  The one time I was glad we had 300 level seats.  We actually sat with some really cool people this time around.  I remember the last preseason game I went to with mom last year against the Colts and how terrible their fans were, especially that one guy who everyone wanted to punch in the face.

It was fun and educational going to a preseason game because we got to see the new draft picks, the players we signed during the off season and the overall chemistry of how the team is on and off the field.  I was excited to see our new WR DK Metcalf.  I believe he will do great things for us this season.

In the first quarter we scored first with a touchdown throw from Geno Smith to Terry Wright.  The throw was perfect and very pretty to watch from our seats.  The crowd went nuts!  Jason Myers made the extra point.  We took the lead 7-0 with 12 minutes let to go in the first quarter.  Our defense stepped up and we only allowed them a field goal during the rest of the quarter.  We led 7-3 going into the second.

The second quarter we scored another touchdown, this time Smith to Jacob Hollister, with eight minutes left to go in the half.  Myers made the extra point and we added to our lead 14-3.  The Raiders marched down the field just before time ran out but only managed another field goal.  We went into half time up 14-6.

As could be expected, the third quarter was extremely boring.  It was pretty much back and forth until three minutes left in the quarter.  The Raiders managed to get another field goal but we still had the lead 14-9.

We finished our drive from the previous quarter with a made field goal from Myers.  We extended our lead 17-9.  We didn't do anything with our last possession but when the Raiders got the ball of course we played very loose defense and they made a run with the last couple minutes of the game.  The scored with less than two minutes left to go making the score 17-15.  They will be going for the 2-point conversion to try and tie it.  They failed.  Our defense sacked the quarterback.

We take our last preseason game from the Raiders 17-15 and finish 3-1 overall.

I texted Liz and told them to meet us down in the lower concourse by the football helmet wall...kinda where we were earlier.  Mom and I made our way down there.  I assumed they would beat us there since they didn't have far to walk.  Since she was easy to spot, with her colored hair, we noticed them right away.  We started the walk back to the Escape.  It had stopped raining during the game so the walk back wasn't soggy.  At least it wasn't cold.  We got back, Darren talked a bit while we listed to the post game show on the radio.  As we left the outskirts of Seattle just about everyone fell asleep so I was alone through most of the drive.  I continued listening to the radio.

We got home fairly quickly since I sped the entire way.  I got off at the College Street exit so we didn't have to drive down Reservation Road in the middle of the night.  We pulled into my driveway around midnight.  Liz and Darren thanked me for driving and I told Liz I would see her next week.  They drove home.

I imagined this going differently.  I was really excited to go to a game with my friend Liz but for some reason it was awkward the entire time especially when I asked if she wanted to take a group picture out near the field.  I asked twice and she seemed like she didn't want a picture so I let it go.  I found it odd but suspected something was going on because her behavior was a little off.  She just wasn't all that fun like she had been in the past.  I honestly was afraid to ask because I don't think she wanted to tell me.  I thought maybe I did something wrong.  I guess we will see what happens.

Family Fun Center, Sparks Firehouse Deli and Geocaching

Ben and I went to bed way too late and slept in the death bed downstairs that aged your back like 30 years when you got up.  My left sciatica was angry.  I went into the bathroom and did my bathroom stuff to get ready for our day.  We went upstairs and Ben made his breakfast turkey sandwiches.  I had mine with orange juice and he had his coffee.  We haven't had a date day in a while so we decided to head up to Tukwila and spend some time at the Family Fun Center.  We weren't coming back to his mom's house after we were done so we packed up our stuff and crammed it into the Escape.  We gave out hugs and thanked his mom for having us over.

I have never been here but have been past here many times wondering what kind of fun was inside.  Since we didn't live near here or frequent up here growing up we never stepped foot inside.  I was in for a real treat.  Ben said we were going to do mini golf and go carts.  I was super excited for go karts.  We jumped into the Escape (since I drove us up to Bonney Lake for the weekend) and hit up 167 towards the Tukwila area.  I had to have Ben tell me where to go because I couldn't remember where it was exactly.

I saw the building, parked and went inside.  I asked Ben when the last time he was here and he said it's been a while.  We weren't sure where we were suppose to go to buy tickets for go karts and mini golf because the one place that you would do it at had a sign that said group check in/registration.  We weren't a group so where do normal people do this at?  We went upstairs and quickly used the restroom and then went back downstairs to ask.  It was the same booth but was very misleading.  We paid for our two activities and headed to the mini golf first.  We got our putters and balls.  The ball machine was weird but we eventually figured it out.  I got a blue ball and Ben got a green ball.  Let the games begin!

There were 36 holes and two different courses, one was called Memory Lane and the second one was called Arctic Adventure.  We did Memory Lane first and kept our balls and then did Arctic Adventure, we broke the rules.  I blame Ben and his peer pressure.  I had three holes in one and I beat Ben.  It was glorious!  He will tell you otherwise but we did keep score on the card.

We walked over to the go kart line and waited about 10 minutes for the next round.  I was super stoked.  I could not wait to get into the go kart and speed!

We finally get into our karts, they tell us the rules, we strap ourselves in and we wait for the go signal.  I peeled out of there as fast as I could.  I had to get in front of Ben since I started out right behind him.  It was a race.  I am not sure how long we got to drive around but I had to make it count.  At one point a stupid (probably 12 or so year old kid) slammed on his brakes right in front of me.  I had to swerve around him just to get away from him.  It was fun trying to catch Ben and finally a few laps before we had to stop I caught up to him and left him in the dust!  Muhahaha!

We parked the karts and got out.  We took a few goofy pictures and walked back out to the Escape.

I asked Ben if he was hungry and he said, "I could eat."  We looked to see if there were any breweries nearby.  There were but none of them served food as well.  We ended up in Sumner and decided to grab a few caches while were here because Streak Week had just started.  We basically had to find a cache everyday for a week and it started today.  We parked in the lot and walked to the first one we attempted to find, The River Edge Café (GCZQX6) but there were too many muggles around to even try to find it.  We moved onto the next one on the other side of the building, Sumner's Canneries (GC100BM).  It was near the loading area in one of the bushes in the landscape island.  It took a few minutes to locate it but we made out with the find.

We went inside the cannery to look at furniture...mostly just for fun.  Ben needed some ideas on what kind of a dresser he wanted to get some day.  His Ikea dresser he's had for a few years is starting to fall apart and he is getting frustrated with it.  We were both getting hungry now and I wanted to find at least one more cache while w were in Sumner.  The closest one was the SUMNER TRAIN STATION (GCZRYR).  A few years ago we tried finding this one with Trish and Amy but it was getting dark and we gave up.  It may have been missing at the time but we wanted to turn that frown upside down.  Again, we spend a few minutes looking and we found it!!  I knew it was one of those darn magnetic nanos.

We need food.  I suggested the Sparks Firehouse Deli, a place we haven't been to in a while, since we weren't that far away from Puyallup.  We both ordered sandwiches and while waiting, Ben ran into his friend Ben and his girlfriend.  They had ordered pizza and came by to pick it up.  Ben and Ben chatted for a bit.  They left to take their pizza home while Ben and I ate our delicious sandwiches.  It was almost too much food by the time we were done.  I ate way too much food this weekend.

We headed back to the freeway and headed home.  It took us about an hour due to traffic and stupid people on the freeway.  We got home, started some laundry, did a few chores, got cleaned up and relaxed a bit before starting the new work week.  We had a great time this weekend visiting his aunt, meeting her world of people, eating food, mini golf and go karts.  Until the next time we come up north!

House Party at Jean's House and Seahawks vs. Chargers Preseason

Trish called us up a few weeks ago and told us that Jean wanted to have a party and that we were all invited.  I wrote the date on the calendar so we didn't double book ourselves.  I asked her what we should bring and she said veggies or something.  I had an idea.

After work on Friday we headed up to Ben's mom's house.  I stopped by the cemetery and visited Grammie and then stopped by the store to grab a few things to take to Jean's house on Saturday for her house/neighborhood party.  I picked up cheese, crackers, veggies and ranch dip.  I was going to use my Seahawks party container I got a few Christmas's ago.

We set our alarms to go off around 8:30-8:45 that morning.  We got up and got ready.  I grabbed my bag and shoved some clothes and our toiletries in it, grabbed the food we were suppose to bring, some games and we were off to Bonney Lake.  I was so glad there wasn't any traffic to wade through.  The trip is about an hour as it was, it really didn't need to be longer.

We got to Bonney Lake around 11:00, we brought stuff in and hung out for a while.  Trish had just finished getting her stuff already to go.  I cleaned out the Seahawk party container while we waited to pack to Tucson and head up to Seattle.  We took our chairs and cooler out of the Escape and put it into the Tucson.  Trish packed up their chairs and their cooler in the back and we left town to head up to Seattle, I got shotgun.  We get to the last traffic light just before you go down the hill into Sumner when Trish yells out some profanity and adds, I forgot the potato salad and pulled pork!  We just laugh at her while she turned around and drove back to the house.  She got out and grabbed them, we were on our way up to Seattle again.

We had some traffic in a few places, which was pretty common, but it wasn't bad considering it was Seattle.  We listened to music while we talked about random things along the way.  We made it through downtown without any troubles and the Northgate area, which usually goes retarded at the bridge but not today!  Ben and I remembered the last time we came up to visit Jean, it was in January 2016 when Ben tested with the Seattle fire department.  We stayed with her for two days.  I can't believe it's been that long.  We are terrible people.

We got to her house around 1:30, parked along side the street and unpacked the car.  Jean was so happy to see us!  We took the food inside to warm some of it up and finish some of the plating while we waited for people to arrive.  I put together my veggie, cracker and cheese platter.

We took our chairs to the back yard and helped Jean take tables, put on table cloths and decorate.  Jean didn't think this would be enough food so we all walked across the street, she literally lives next to a Safeway, and got some more food.  I bought a cherry Pepsi and some of those awesome giant chocolate chip cookies from the bakery.  I tried looking for the new Cougar logo Coke's but I couldn't find any.  We paid for our stuff and walked back to the house.

We took all the food and started arranging it onto the tables outside.  We almost had too much food for the amount of table space we had.  We had to get creative.  People started to arrive.  I had no idea who anyone was except for Forrest, I had met him several years ago.  We all went to the back and piled food on our plates.  I definitely ate way too much.  We spent most of the afternoon sitting in our lawn chairs and meeting Jean's neighbors and friends.  She even has a creepy old guy neighbor who seemed to like Trish's boobs.  She walked away from that as soon as he spoke.

The weather was partly sunny and about an hour or so later the marine layer moved in.  Seattle is smack dab in the middle of the convergence zone so anything was possible on a nice day like this.  I asked Ben if he wanted to walk down the street to grab a geocache and to walk off all of our food we just ate.  I told him it was about three tenths of a mile away from Jean's house.  He said sure.  We told Trish that we would be back and that we were going to get a geocache.  She said have fun.

Ugh, super full.  The walk down the road was kinda hard.  We are such fat kids.  Lol.  As we got closer to Here's Johnny (GC84NF3) as we neared a parking lot.  It didn't take us log to find it but we had to be careful because there were muggles walking around.  We sat in the parking lot, signed our names, took a picture and put it back.

We made our way back to Jean's house.  We enjoyed more of the party and took a few pictures.  Around 4:30 we helped Jean clean up a bit, we packed up our stuff and thanked her for a good time.  Hugs were passed around as we walked out to the street.

We drove back to Bonney Lake, we hit a few patches of traffic.  As we drove past south Seattle, we saw a brand new kayak on the side of I-5, I wished we would have had the means to pick it up and take it home with us but we didn't have the proper vehicle nor the safety along the shoulder to even have a chance to pick it up.  It was unfortunate.  We talked about stuff on the way home while we listened to music.  I asked if we could stop and grab a geocache in Sumner.  Trish said sure.

We got off of Hwy 410 near the Winco at the bottom of the hill and told Trish were to drive to.  I had stopped by here probably two or three years ago now and didn't find it.  I think it was missing when I looked for it the last time.  I read some logs and it was suppose to be here because it was found recently.  Stream Buffer Boundary (GC5K62H) was a quick find this time.  It had to have been missing last time because I walked right up to it today.  It was my 11,500th cache milestone.  I got our names on it and forced everyone to take a picture with me.  Don't let them kid ya, they like it.

We went the back way home and stopped by Victor Falls because it was a nice day and there was a new geocache here, Victor Falls (GC746ZF).  It was a quick find with a creative container.

We got back to the house, unloaded the Tucson and turned on the TV to the Seahawks preseason game.  We watched the game while we played around on our computers.  The Seahawks beat the Chargers 23-15.  We ate popcorn and played dice with Trish and I lost both games.  Bummer.  We got cleaned up and got ready for bed.

I reflected on what we did a year ago today.  It was one of the saddest days of my life.  A year ago today, we lost Grammie at around 11:30 that night.  I was devastated.  That day was the first day I had experienced the hardest human emotion ever, grief.  It was a mentally rough night for me and I didn't sleep very well.  I miss you Grammie!
