I took Friday off for bereavement just in case Dad needed me for something. The day before I went with him to Mills and Mills to start the funeral arrangements. Funerals are so expensive! The same package we got for Grammie in 2018 was $2,000 more for Grandpa in a four-year span. Insane!
I slept in a little bit, had some breakfast and spent the morning working on Grandpa's memorial, putting together the pictures we were going to use for the slideshow and writing up different obituaries for various outlets. I had gotten a hold of Old Smokey, a newsletter for retired US Forest Service employees. I had an email thread going with one of newsletter contacts about getting a memorial page in for Grandpa and concluding his subscription since we didn't need it anymore. We were supposed to get that last issue sometime after January.
I was running out of time for my witch costume I had to wear for my trip to the east coast next week, so I left to go search for parts for it at the Value Village, Dollar Tree and Fred Meyer. Mom and I had already bought our shoes a couple weeks ago so that was checked off the getting ready for our trip list. I managed to find a "witch cape" and a hat. I got home, put the stuff away, wrote in my blog a little bit, ate a tuna sandwich for a late lunch, cleaned the house up a bit for the busyness of the upcoming weekend.
Ben came home shortly from work, changed his clothes and I asked him if tonight was a good night to go get a McDonald's happy meal. He said sure. McDonald's brought back the Halloween buckets from when we were kids. We weren't sure which one we were going to get. We hopped into the Edge and drove to our nearest McDonald's off of Yelm Highway. We decided not to go through the drive thru because it was super busy, so we went inside to order.
McDonald's has changed a lot since we were kids. Everything was just about computerized and everyone waiting for food were people being paid to pick up orders for other people, such as Uber Eats, Grub Hub and Door Dash. It was really weird the first time I ordered pizza on the internet and the first time Doug ordered food that someone else dropped off. I would be super confused if you plucked me from 1998 and put me into this world.
We ordered, paid, waited a few minutes, grabbed our McBoo Halloween buckets and jumped back in the Edge to head home. We ate it while we watched a few of the Big Bang Theory episodes on HBO Max.
Ben mentioned a few days prior that he wanted to do something "Halloweenie" this year. In the past, we had gone to different haunted houses over the years and stopped going because of Covid. He had asked if we wanted to go to My Morbid Mind again. Our first time to this haunted house was in 2013. We were a brand-new dating couple, literally in the first week of making it official.
After finishing our happy meal from our McBoo bucket, we hopped back in the Edge and drove the short distance to My Morbid Mind. It was raining, which was a huge bummer, found a place to park and went inside to purchase tickets. We stood in line; Ben knew someone from disc gold standing in line nearby and briefly chatted and waited for our turn. I was excited to see the differences and changes they made from almost 9 years ago.
It was almost our turn and they handed us some 3D glasses. Interesting. Let's see what they did. The paint with the 3D glasses was a nice different approach on a haunted house. The walls felt like they were moving in on you...almost like a fun house like effect. I enjoyed the 3D addition. We the next section was the more morbid part of the haunted house...you know, like the traditional dead bodies, people dressed up like zombies and scary things jumping out at scaring you. There was a scene that was pretty gruesome. It was a kitchen set that looked like it's been ignored for years, dead bodies, rats, spoiled food, blood, body parts, it was awesome. The third part was a series of dark tunnels, and you had no idea which way you were going or what was lurking around the corners. My only critique with the tunnel part is that this is the Pacific Northwest, and it may rain during the month of October and to reinforce the roof better. Our shoes got soaked because there were mud puddles everywhere and you couldn't see them. Other than that, we had a good time.
We drove home, cleaned up the house some more and I started making some of my treats I wanted to make for the next day's pumpkin carving night. This was the first one with friends since 2019. Ben and I were excited to host it. I chose to do Rice Krispy treat in the shape of candy corn. I didn't realize how hard these were actually going to be. I needed some small marshmallows, so I sent Ben to the store to get them for me in-between video game playing.
I also made some chocolate chip cookies with black and orange M&M's in them. Both Ben and I went to bed way too late...around 3 a.m. Yikes! Time flies when you're baking treats!
