Bucoda Coffin Races, Pumpkin Patch & October Game Night

I was talking to mom the other day and asked her when she wanted to go to the pumpkin patch this year.  I told her it can't be at the end of the season like last year when everything is already picked through and destroyed.  She said, why not this weekend?  I said it's gotta be before game night tonight.  She also said that she was going to Bucoda to watch the coffin races and that we should meet her there.  I told her I would think about it.

Ben had just came from a 24-hour shift at the fire station so he was going to sleep in a bit before coming out to the pumpkin patch.  I told him mom wanted to go to Bucoda to see the coffin races and that she wanted us to meet her out there.  I would let him know when we were on our way to Rutledge so he could meet us there.  He said okay.

Erika and I made it out to Bucoda and found a place to park.  We really weren't sure where to go but because Bucoda is a small town we figured we would find our way around.  We called mom to see where she was and we found her with her camera at the finish line.  We joined her for the various heats of coffin-goers.

Some of the coffins were very creative and some were less creative.  The costumes were fun as well.  Mom mentioned that we should make a coffin and enter next year.

After the races we walked around and enjoyed some of the hearst's that people decked out for the event.  A few years ago Ben and I went to the town's haunted house.

They had signs up all around town inviting you to the haunted house.  We decided it was time to head to Rutledge Farms and pick out a pumpkin.  We needed one anyway because game night was at Celeste's house tonight.  I text Ben to let him know we were on our way to the pumpkin patch.

We headed into Tumwater on Hwy 99.  Turned onto 93rd and made our way down the road to the farm.  There were a lot of people here today.  It didn't surprise me because it was a really nice day for October.  I texted Ben again to see how far he was out and if he left yet.  He hadn't.  Erika, mom and I walked around for a bit taking the pumpkin patch all in.  Of course mom brought her camera to take pictures of everything.  This is usually the reason why we go anywhere...well, that and geocaching.

We grabbed one of the wagons and walked out to the pumpkins.  We had to dodge the tractor tram a few times.  We all found a pumpkin that we were pretty happy with.

Erika and mine were going to be carved that evening.  I wasn't sure what kind of design I wanted mine to have.  We were almost done and Ben finally arrived.  I walked out there with him while mom and Erika waited in line to pay for their pumpkins.

While I was helping Ben find his pumpkin mom had mentioned going out to lunch afterwards for pizza.  Ben was crabby about it because he had just eaten breakfast and that's why he was late getting here.  He asked me why I didn't tell him.  I had just found out that's what mom wanted to do minutes before he arrived.  At that point he had already eaten and was well on his way.  He lightened up a bit and chose his pumpkin.  We pulled our pumpkins over to the weighing/cashiers station.  Mom and Erika weren't that far ahead of us.  We all paid, put our pumpkins in the trunks and decided on what kind of pizza we wanted.  I suggested Brewery City.  Mom loved that idea.

We all headed over to Brewery City and nommed on some salads and pepperoni and olive pizza.  It sure hit the spot.  While we ate, we watched a really close Duck-Husky football game.  The Ducks won it in overtime 30-27.  I was very happy to see that score.  That meant the Cougs had a better shot at the Pac-12 championship come December.

We went to the store afterwards so mom could pick up a few things.  I got some pumpkin carving stuff because I wasn't sure where my stuff was.  Plus it's nice to update some of that stuff every now and then.  Mom headed home and we all went back to the house.  I had made my Halloween Rice Krispy treats the day before so they were ready to go for game night.

We headed over to Celeste's house, brought our stuff in and immediately started getting all the food set out.  I also brought stuff for "mummy" dogs and left some of the sausage dogs without any croissants so Nicole could eat them.  There was quite the spread.

We ate, chatted about the stuff that has been happening, we laughed and we enjoyed our food.  Then we cleared off the table and got our pumpkin carving stuff set up.  We had two giant bowls in the middle for pumpkin guts and seeds, some large scraping spoons, an assortment of knives, the patterns and small plastic pumpkin carving tools.  We all took some time to figure out what kind of pattern we wanted.  I did another goofy face.  Celeste and Isaac both decided to carve a pineapple instead of a pumpkin.  We found out later Celeste's hands and arms broke out because of the enzymes in the pineapple.

Once everyone was done we put them out on the porch and for the past five years we've been doing this exact photo every year.  We use it as our Facebook cover photo and it's only seasonally appropriate one month a year.  We got our new one for this month.

Some people stayed and played a few games and some of the others went home.  Ben and I stayed for a bit to play games and then had to go home to get some sleep.  I found out that evening that WSU was finally going to get College Game Day after 15 years of waiting!  It was going to be an epic week!  GO COUGS!
