Ever since I've known Walt and Wendy they've invited us to go with them
every summer to watch fireworks in the Fife area. Because of our
horrid schedules over the years we were not able to go with them. This
year was the first year we could go with them. I've never heard of Firecracker Alley nor
did I know there was an old Emerald Queen Casino on the other side of the Port
of Tacoma/Industrial area. It was sponsored by the Puyallup Indian Tribe,
whom Walt works for, and they also sell fireworks at this location as
well.
I had Ben drive because we were going to drive the crap out of the Escape
next weekend when we went to Bend with my mom and dad. Wendy asked us to
bring chips and I had bought some of those Maui Onion chips the other day when
I was at the store so we didn't have to make an extra stop. Wendy also
gave us the address and Ben had thought he knew where that area was.
About halfway there we gave her a call just to make sure we were going to the
right place. She gave us landmark/street directions and I wrote them down
on a rogue piece of paper. Her directions were perfect.
We saw the tent she spoke of along with her dancing and waving at
us near the driveway into the parking lot. She pointed to where we
could park. We got out with our chairs and chips. Walt started
heating up the grill for his wiener hamburgers. Yes, you heard me
right...wiener hamburgers with cheese rolled in. They didn't take long to
cook and we ate them with hotdog buns, chips, a salad, drinks and for dessert
we had a Rice Krispy treat shaped like a watermelon. It was pretty awesome. We sat in our chairs, ate our food and
visited.
I wanted to use the restroom before the show started so a group of us walked
over toward the bathrooms and the firework stands. Usually when you go into a porta potty you
lock the door behind you to let others know it’s occupied right? Well the door said vacant so I opened it and
surprised a guy who was peeing. I closed
it immediately and waited for one that was actually vacant, like I can see the
person vacating the porta potty.
We walked around the firework stands and saw the same thing in just about
every single one of them. There were
firework packages taller than I was! They
had to have been over $300 or more. I
can’t believe anyone would actually spend that much money on fireworks. I always give myself a limit and that limit
always has been $100. You can get an
array of fireworks for that much money and keep everyone entertained. I wasn’t going to buy any fireworks but it
was nice to see what was around since I haven’t bought fireworks in at least 2
or 3 years.
We walked back and continued visiting until Walt said it was about to
start. Apparently there was a malfunction
and the fireworks at the beginning were very spread apart. There had to be at least five minutes in
between each firework. We were pretty
close as it was so they were bam right in your face. Then at one point they got quicker and
quicker until all hell broke loose and it was actually intense there for a
while. I actually sat back in my chair
watching this beast of a firework show.
It only lasted about 15 minutes but any free firework show is awesome to me. We picked up our stuff and put it in Ben’s
car. We stayed behind for a bit while we
paid for the rest of our dining room table and chairs and to visit a bit with
them. At about 11, we headed back
towards Lacey via I-5. It didn’t take us
long to get home. I was so tired plus we
had to get up at a somewhat decent time tomorrow so we could get ready for the
BBQ I was hosting at my house for the 4th of July and for Erika and
Travis, who came up from Nevada to hang out with us for a few days. They came up on their motorcycle and got here
about dinner time. They stayed in a
hotel near the freeway near the Denny’s on College and Martin Way. We contacted Erika on the way home to ask her
if she wanted us to come get her in the morning and she said it would be easier
than trying to come over on the bike.
We got home just before midnight and I took a quick shower and got ready for
bed. The next few days are going to be
really busy.
Next Adventure: BBQ for Erika, Travis and the 4th of July
