Geocaching Community Celebration Event in Wonderwood Park

Beginning in December 2019, eligible geocachers can apply to host Community Celebration Events in 2020-2022.  These events will enable cachers around the world to commemorate the 20th anniversary of geocaching with a new icon and souvenir. The cache type was originally known as the Lost and Found Event cache.

These geocaching Community Celebrations were supposed to be celebrated in 2020 for the 20th anniversary of geocaching but you all know what happened, Covid.  Covid ruined just about everything I had planned in 2020 including my geocaching events.  I was angry, it was depressing, boring and a HUGE waste of time.  I really hope we never have to do that again in my lifetime.

I didn't apply for one because I was too busy at the time, and I figured there would at least be one in Thurston County somewhere hosted by someone I knew.  Turns out, I was right.  Gabe (Wasurf) and Ohjoy (Joy) each had one going on within weeks of each other and I was able to go to both!

Wasurf picked his to take place in Wonderwood Park, since this is where he began his geocaching career back in 2009.  I was really hoping that the weather would be decent or at least have a covered area to stand inside of.  I haven't been to Wonderwood Park since last August when I was trying to finish the Adventure Lab that began in the park.

I logged off from work, changed my clothes into something warmer, went to the bank and then to the recycle in Hawks Prairie and then headed to the park since it didn't start until 5:30.  I had Ben meet me there since I wasn't sure what time he would be off work.  I wanted him to at least enjoy one of these celebrations since I didn't think he would be able to go to Ohjoy's in a couple weeks.  We parked in the lot off of Ruddell Road and then walked to the covered area where Gabe, Bev and a couple other geocachers were waiting.

Ben and I signed the logbook and just hung out the rest of the time since we have all the caches in the park already.  Ben stayed for about a half hour or so and then he went home.  He had some interview prep to do.  I stayed behind and chatted with the two Lackey's who showed up and a caching duo named The Dips.  It was interesting sharing stories with them.  I told him about my trip to Peru last September and my upcoming one to New York, DC and Pennsylvania in the upcoming days.  He said he's only found one cache in NY and that was the one up on the Empire State Building.  He said that one was fun to do.

We got a couple of group photos as people came and went.  Before it was time to go, the two Lackey's, JT Coffee and Giacaches gave us one of their Lackey tags.  It was fun to chat with them and hear their fun stories.  The people who weren't from here, there were many people from up north, went to go find some of the caches inside the park.  Bev went home because she was getting cold, and I stayed a little bit longer chatting with Gabe.  I decided to go home because I was getting cold, and it was almost 7 p.m.  I needed some dinner and a shower.  I thanked Gabe for the event and walked to the Escape.
