I had to start thinking about planning Grandma's birthday soon so about a month ago, I asked Grandma what kind of food she would like to have at her birthday party. She said she had to think about it and get back to me. One day, she sent me a recipe on Facebook messenger that she found on Pinterest. I took a look at it, and it looked easy, and I could probably get it done but not having a big enough deep fryer might make this hard. She said not to worry, she's been browsing Pinterest for some ideas and had a couple more to share. She sent me and idea to make crock pot wings and I said, I could definitely do that since I have plenty of crock pots. I just needed to know what else we were going to have with it, and she added, French fries, a green salad and for dessert a cherry pie. I told her that all of that was doable.
I asked her if Sunday was a good day to have the party and if St. Patrick's Day themed would be okay and she said all of that was fine. We decided on 1 p.m. and I wrote out the email to everyone letting them know all the details. I ended up decorating the house in St. Patrick's Day stuff and I had to go get me an Irish flag to stick on the wall. It was hard keeping the kitties from ripping down the decorations.
Later on, that week, I asked Dad if we still had party fund money and he said yes. I asked him if he would drop it by so we can keep it in a jar and just add to it and he said yes, he can. When he did come by, he had about $120 in an envelope. I added some change and a couple bucks to it. I would go grocery shopping the Friday before the party. Erika decided she didn't have time to make the cherry pie, so I had to ask Mom to do it and she was fine with it.
On Friday, after work, I went to Costco to see if they had some of the stuff I needed. I picked up some hamburger and Diet Dr. Pepper for Grandma, as a gift, grapes, frozen chicken wings (because they were a better price for what I got), laundry soap, a jar of vitamin E and really wanted to get some toilet paper and paper towels but this Costco had none, like, there was no trace of these two products anywhere. I was at a loss. Now, I had to go to the other Costco some other time. Lame.
After Costco, I went to Walmart to get the rest of the other stuff and some groceries for our household. I picked up the crinkle cut fries, some lettuce, more croutons and the rest of the stuff was ours. I went home, unloaded groceries, was really hungry and wanted dinner but I had to go get Doug's butt from downtown Olympia because he drank himself stupid. Great, just what I want to deal with tonight.
On Saturday night after that day's activities, I decided to vacuum the floor, so I didn't have to do the next day when we were busy doing other things. I immediately started the wings in the crock pot since they needed to cook for at least three hours. Ben helped me with the tables and chairs. I got the napkins, plates, silverware and bowls out. Doug got up and cleaned the bathroom and got some decent clothes on and I started the fries in the oven as I checked the wings.
Just before one, everyone started to arrive. I knew the food wasn't going to be done on time, but I was sure going to try. I kept the wings inside the crock pots as long as I could. They cooked for almost three and a half hours so they should be done, right? I went with it. I had Dad help me get the crock pots, since I had to plug them into different circuits around the house, and he helped me dump them into bowls. I had to make two different kinds, Asian sweet and spicy and a BBQ, mostly for Mom because she wasn't going to eat the Asian sweet and spicy ones. I took the fries out, made sure the salad fixin's got out on the counter and told everyone to come eat.
We were used to eating crispy wings, but these ones weren't deep fried, so we had to get used to the texture. I was just hoping that they were cooked all the way through because some of them I couldn't tell. Everyone was suspicious of the wings but ate them anyway. I told everyone if they were weary of them that they could put them in the microwave for a few minutes. I promised everyone that next time we have wings or something similar I would cook them in the oven. Everyone kept saying that it was okay. I get it but I didn't want someone to poop themselves later today.
We finished our food, cleared plates and Grandma opened her gifts. Mom got her a weighted blanket, I got her some hamburger and Diet Dr. Pepper, Erika got her some flowers and Trish got her some CBD oil and some flowers. Grandma thanked everyone for the gifts. Trish helped me cut up the pie and scoop vanilla ice cream for everyone. The pie was really good, and I realized I haven't had cherry pie in a really long time.
Everyone gathered their stuff and started getting ready to head out the door to go home. We thanked everyone for coming over. They all went home. I started to clean up the living room. We threw away the garbage, loaded the dishwasher, put all the chairs away and did some more vacuuming because someone had muddy shoes.
Since we had some daylight left and it was nice outside, we did the annual clean of the BBQ. It only took us about an hour to finish it. Afterwards, Ben and I went to Home Depot to get ourselves a new BBQ cover since ours had seen better days. Ben used his gift card to purchase it along with a couple of tools he needed.
We came home and spent the rest of the night getting ready for the upcoming work week. I need a vacation.
