Mom had the week off and we didn't get to do what we had planned for this week originally. We decided to stick close to home and take a bunch of day trips to state parks. Before today I had 29 of my 50 parks done. I decided to only to go to 50 instead of the 100 parks because by the time I got to them the 30 coins will be gone. By the time next week gets here we should have our 50 so we can send in our passport to Ranger Tina at Cama Beach.
We knew it was going to be another hot one today so we packed up some snacks and lots of water to take with us. Our plan was to hit Rainbow Falls State Park, Willapa Hills Trail Head and Ike Kinswa State Park...all within a 50 mile radius of our house. We could probably do it in about 3-4 hours.
Our first one was Rainbow Falls, a cache by Frisbee'r.
I have never been to Rainbow Falls State Park but have been by it
several times on our way to PeEll and Raymond to play basketball and
fastpitch against their high schools. My mom remembered hanging out here with family
when they were younger. Uncle John used to jump off the bridge into the
deep part of the river back in the day. We arrived and there were lots
of people camping nearby, thankfully not where we had to go to grab the
cache. We snaked our way down the trail and found the cache quickly,
stamped our passports, signed the log and put it back just as we found
it. We went back to the car and drove around the Hwy 6 side of the park to look at the falls. I expected something bigger.
We drove the 9ish miles east to the next one which was a trail head system owned by the state, the Willapa Hills Trail Head, another cache by Frisbee'r.
I remember driving by this area while out caching with Bob and Bev
last fall. I never thought a trail system could be a state park. I
learned something new today. We parked the car in the designated parking lot and headed east to the entrance of the trail head. We took the short hike up the well
maintained road and even had six trucks drive by as we walked in and out
from the cache. We found the cache quickly, stamped our passports,
signed the log and put it back just as we found it or maybe better than we found it.
On to Ike Kinswa, one off of Hwy 12 near Mossyrock.
I knew we were in for a hike after reading the logs when the cache first
came out. I have never been to this park but have done some boating in
Mayfield Lake nearby several years ago. We found the trail head and
off we went, following some local teens. There were a lot of muddy
places but didn't get too dirty as we made our way around the spots. We
got to the cache, which was hidden well, no one was around to bother us
so I brought it away from its hiding spot and set it on the trail to
where we had more room to maneuver. We stamped our passports, signed
the log and but it back better than we found it and made our way back to
the car after taking a few pictures of the surrounding area. It was so humid outside it felt like we just left the jungle. We were very sweaty when we got in the car.
We went back the way we came but turned down Jackson Highway just for some different scenery. We planned to stop by Sun Birds in Chehalis to see if they had the pools that were on sale this week. Yelm did not have any when we were there yesterday. We walked in and they had plenty. We decided to get the bigger one. It came with a pump and a filter. We got some ice cream on the way home. When we got home, we unloaded the car and I started getting the pool ready to go. By the time it got dark, I had the pool filled up and ready for the installment of the pump for another day.
Next Adventure: The Columbia Gorge, Yakima Sportsman and I-90.
