Friday, May 24th
We approached Memorial Day Weekend, and I really wished I would have been able to take a long weekend, but I needed to save time for the wedding and the honeymoon next February. It was really hard not to take a vacation or extra time off. That morning, I pulled myself out of bed and logged on at work. My co-worker took that Friday off, so I had to do all the DE's and the unknown provider list. I was not a fan, but I had to get it done. I could not wait for the workday to end so I didn't have to sit in front of a computer anymore. I needed a long weekend.
At lunch, I went and let Murphy out. Rhonda and Brad would be home from New Zealand the following day. I hurried back and made myself a quick lunch. The afternoon was pretty easy going once we got all of our work done.
I logged off, went for a walk around the park and while I walked, I chatted with Ms. Hamel. It was her birthday, and it was fun to see what she was doing. She asked me lots of questions about the stuff I've been doing. We talked about the baby, the wedding, cooking, traveling and the current state of college sports. We visited for over an hour. She thanked me for calling her on her birthday and that we would talk again soon.
I went inside and started making the rest of the food for my Oklahoma dish. I had made the BBQ sauce on Wednesday and all I had to do was make the cornbread. Ben was in charge of grilling the pork steaks and Josh and Heather brought baked beans.
Once the food was done, we ate, played Skipbo - but had to cut the game short because Heather was falling asleep. She had woken up at 4 a.m. to go to work that day and it caught up to her.
We thanked them for coming and I sent Josh home with some of the BBQ sauce. Ben and I cleaned up the kitchen, put the table and chairs away and he got ready for a very long shift at the fire station over the next couple days.
Saturday, May 25th
Ben got up early, got ready and headed into Tenino for his 24-hour shift. I slept in until about 9:30, got dressed and ate some oatmeal for breakfast. I started a load of laundry, put the dishes away, loaded up the recycle and the two wedding dresses and headed into Rainier. I totally drove past and forgot to do the recycle, derp, but got to Grandma's house to come up with a plan for the two dresses. I wanted to add a piece of Mom's wedding dress to mine.
We looked at it and based off of what mine looked like and how Mom's was made, the only logical solution was to take the hem off of the bottom of Mom's dress and add it to the bottom of my dress. She took a seam ripper to the bottom of Mom's dress and got the bottom hem off of it. She needed to soak it because it had yellowed over the past 40 years. We looked at my dress and found the perfect placement for it. She said it would take her a few days to get it all done. I also asked her to make me some pillowcases with some of Grandpa's flannel shirts. She said she could find a pattern for that. I just needed to supply the pillows. I was over there for about two hours while we went over some of the projects, I was going to pay her to do.
I thanked her and left. I went into Yelm and met Mom at the Dollar Tree to get a few things. She said she was hungry, so we decided to go next door to Young's Teriyaki for some "linner". I haven't been to Young's in a while. We both got the usual, chicken teriyaki, rice and salad. Since we ate it there, we had some miso soup. We finished up and Mom had to do some more shopping, and I needed to go replace my geocache at Millersylvania Park.
I headed out and chatted with Ben as I made my way towards the park. We talked about our days thus far. I told him I had to hang up because I didn't get very good cell coverage out that way. I found a place to park at the day use area, grabbed a new container, bag, logbook and pen and walked to the ol' stump. I had to dig out some of the debris from the middle of it so I could hide the cache better. Over time the stump had degraded a little bit. I placed my new one without any muggles around, covered it up with the pieces of bark and foliage, and walked back to the Escape.
On my way to I-5, I stopped and grabbed the newest cache, Sleepy Hollow (GCANTFM) via 93rd. It was a quick park and grab. I got onto I-5 and drove north towards Hawks Prairie. I went to Walmart, talked to Trish for a little bit, and finished off at Winco. I went home, unloaded the groceries, put them away, did some laundry and some other random things.
I watched some TV, worked on my blog, logged my cache and started putting more stuff into boxes. I took down the magnets on the fridge. I really wanted to get a head start on packing.
Before bed, I read some of my book and then went to sleep.
Sunday, May 26th
I got up around 10, ate a homemade McMuffin and did a couple things before running some errands around town. I gathered up all the recycle and drove into Hawks Prairie. I dropped that off and decided to go to Costco to get more bins for packing up our belongings. I chose the wrong day to go because Costco was a literal zoo! I got what I needed and was in and out in 20 minutes or so. I went over to Safeway to pick up some newspaper so I could wrap up the breakables. When did newspapers get so expensive?!
I went home, worked on my blog...I was six months behind, started the brownies, Dad came over so I could ask him questions about the dryer, it had been making a growling sound for the past couple months. He said it's probably the wheels or the belt or both. He recommended that we purchase a dryer kit off of Amazon. That's what I did with the appropriate model number. I had a geocacher and his kids stop by for the cache in the yard, they thanked me for how cool it was. I changed out the shower curtain, cleaned the shower heads with some baking soda and vinegar. I went for a quick walk around the park. I packed up a few things into boxes.
I got all the stuff out for cupcakes and put those together. While they cooked, I went through all the change I've collected over the past 10+ years to get that all sorted and counted out for when we take it to the bank. It took longer than I thought it would. I let the cupcakes cool when they were done. I'm glad I decided to make these the night before.
I got in a shower, iced the brownies and cupcakes, I did the dishes, worked on my blog some more and ate popcorn while I listened to my podcasts.
Ben came home from a 12-hour shift around 11:30 that night. He had decided to do it all at once, first a 24-hour shift and then a 12, for a total of 36 hours. He got cleaned up and we went to bed after 1 a.m. after reading some of my book.
Monday, May 27th
We both got up around 10ish and got ready for the day. I spent some time working on Zac's watermelon cake. I made a giant mess in the kitchen. Ben worked on his expense report for work from his trip to Virginia he took a couple weeks ago.
I packed up the watermelon cake, brownies, cupcakes, the sausage dogs, buns and beans and got the table and chairs into the back of the Escape too. My long weekends are so busy! We chose to have it at Erika and Zac's house because they were the closest to the hospital just in case the baby came that day. We were actually hoping he did by having it there. He did not arrive that day unfortunately.
Ben and I left around 11:30 and headed over. We unloaded everything out of the Escape, helped them set up the table and chairs and worked on finishing up the watermelon cake - which I found out that I accidentally left the blueberries at home. Luckily, Erika had some we could use. Ben helped Zac get the BBQ going.
Once it was up and going, Doug and Sonya showed up with the mac and cheese and some chips. Ben cooked sausage dogs and burgers. I was just hoping for sausage dogs just to make the cooking simple, but everyone wanted burgers too. Now, we had to get out the burger fixings. As Erika and I got that ready, Mom, Dad and Grandma arrived with the potato salad, deviled eggs, veggie platter and some ketchup because Erika and Zac were almost out. We got everything set up along the buffet table. Erika opened up some baby gifts from Grandma while Ben finished up the burgers and sausage dogs.
Once the food was done, we all got plates and piled on the food. Not everyone let Ben know who wanted burgers, so he didn't make enough. Doug and Sonya had to go make their own because Dad stole theirs, haha. After we ate, we helped Erika clean the kitchen, did the dishes and wiped down stuff. We got the cupcakes and watermelon cake ready. We lit the candles and sang happy birthday to Zac.
People enjoyed both the watermelon cake and cupcakes. Zac opened his presents, and he pretty much got junk food, milk and some pillowcases because we never really know what he actually wants. Erika said that stuff was perfect. We finished cleaning up the house, put the table and chairs back into the Escape, chatted with Erika for a few minutes, thanked her for hosting and left to drive to Tenino.
We got onto I-5 and then got off at 93rd and drove down Tilley to the back road to Tenino. We arrived at their house and Josh had made short ribs, pasta salad, red rice and cut up some fruit. I contributed the frosted brownies. Both Ben and I ate a little bit of everything since we had just eaten at Erika and Zac's house. We sat outside at the picnic table, ate and chatted about random things and listened to Heather's stories. We ended up talking about DNA kits and whatnot.
We checked out the chickens, the ducks and turkeys and the baby chicken. We threw the frisbee for the dog and stayed until about 7:30 and then decided it was time to head home to get ready for the upcoming work week.
We got home, unloaded the Escape, got some stuff ready for dinner the next night, put stuff away, ordered a dryer kit from Amazon, watched the rest of the hockey game, talked to Mom, got showered, worked on my blog, got ready for bed, read my book for a while, Ben played his game too late and we both got crappy sleep. Long weekends are way too short!
